Nursing in General Practice

Nurses play an important role in contributing to safe, high quality primary healthcare for patients in general practice. There are approximately 14,000 nurses working in general practice in Australia, with around 63% of general practices employing at least one nurse (APNA).  As of March 2018, there were 378 nursing staff working in general practice in the Gold Coast.
Nurses can bring many benefits to general practices which include:
  • improved health outcomes particularly in chronic disease
  • reduction in waiting times to see a clinician
  • an increase in the range of services available at the practice
  • and improved integration, both within the practice and externally.
