The Student Nurse Clinical Placements initially trialled in 2009 with a partnership between General Practice Gold Coast and Griffith University School of Nursing and Midwifery. The student nurse program currently coordinates annual placements for nursing students in General Practice for over 170 student nurses.

In the 2018/2019 Financial Year, Gold Coast Primary Health Network: 

  • Placed 140 Year 2 and Year 3 Student Nurses from Griffith University 
  • Organised a Nurse Preceptor Workshop in partnership with Griffith University to train and upskill our Registered Nurse Trainers 

GCPHN is working closely with Griffith University School of Nursing and Midwifery and Southern Cross University School of Nursing in coordinating clinical placements in General Practice for student nurses. 

If you would like to be a part of this initiative 

Preceptor Training Workshops 

Preceptor Training is provided bi-annually at our Robina office which covers preceptor requirements, expectations, support and the electronic Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT).   

Training invitations are emailed to all practices as well as listed on our web page annually. 
The date for the next 2020 Preceptor Training workshop is 6th February 2020.

Placement Information 

  • Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia guidelines require nursing students to have direct supervision by a Registered Nurse 
  • Students can be shared between practice nurses 
  • Students are required to do 8 hours per day totalling 40 hours per week 
  • A 40-hour week may include public holidays and can include weekend and evening shifts  Block duration varies between 2 to 4 weeks 


Practice Information 

  • General practices will be paid $50 (inclusive of GST) per day per student for each placement day completed 
  • General practices provide students the opportunity to transition from classroom to practice consolidating theory to practice 
  • Positive general practice placements encourage students to consider a career in General Practice 
  • General practice placements provide students insight to general practice nurses diverse nursing role and interaction with other health professionals as part of primary health
  • General practice placements expose’s students to aspects of care they may not otherwise encounter 


Preceptor Information 

  • Required to attend Preceptor Training:
    • ​Training provided free during an evening meeting  
    • Training hours may contribute to CPD points 
  • Preceptor supervision hours may contribute to CPD points 
  • Preceptors operate under the preceptor model of supervision 
  • Preceptors gain immense job satisfaction in supporting future nurses 
  • The Student Attendance/RCTI form is to be completed by preceptors and returned to GCPHN to generate practice payment.
